Sony announces FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 super-telephoto zoom lens

Sony has revealed the FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS, its first 800mm super-telephoto zoom lens for the Alpha E-mount system

Designed for wildlife, sports, and aviation photography, the FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS offers an extended focal range with stabilisation and autofocus features.

Optical performance

Sony says the FE 400-800mm lens is designed to maintain image clarity across its zoom range. It includes an 11-blade circular aperture, six Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements and lens coatings to minimise flare and ghosting.

The lens supports 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, allowing the focal length to be extended up to 1600mm.

Autofocus and tracking

The lens features dual linear motors for autofocus, which are intended to provide fast and accurate subject tracking. It is designed to work with Sony’s Alpha 9 III, supporting 120 fps burst shooting. A focus limiter switch allows for refined focus adjustments.

Handling and stabilisation

An internal zoom mechanism helps maintain a consistent centre of gravity for stable handling. The built-in Optical SteadyShot (OSS) image stabilisation aims to reduce motion blur and is compatible with Sony’s in-body stabilisation systems.

Build and usability features

Constructed with dust and moisture resistance, the lens includes a fluorine-coated front element for easier maintenance. It also features three focus hold buttons and a redesigned lens hood with a lock button and filter access.

Pricing and availability

The Sony FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS is expected to be available from March 2025, with a retail price of approximately £2,550. For more details, visit the Sony website.
