Sigma has just announced its first mirrorless zoom lens for crop sensor cameras, the 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN | Contemporary. It offers a full-frame equivalent focal range of 27-75mm with a wide f/2.8 constant aperture, delivering high optical performance across the entire zoom range – all contained within a compact, lightweight body.
The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN | Contemporary caters to a wide range of photographic styles and genres, including landscapes, portraits, street photography, architecture and events. It is also capable of recording high-quality video and supports macro-style close-up photography, offering a maximum magnification of 1:2.8 and a minimum focusing distance of just 12.1cm. Offering a large f/2.8 aperture across the entire zoom range, it is also easy to achieve blurry backgrounds and soft bokeh effects when shooting portraits and close-ups.
High optical performance is guaranteed by the lens’s carefully arranged lens elements, including three high-precision glass-molded aspherical elements. Optical imperfections such as distortion and vignetting are kept to a minimum by in-camera aberration correction, ensuring that all images are crisp, clear and high quality. The lens uses a stepping motor as the AF actuator in order to achieve fast and silent AF, making it well-suited to shooting in low-noise environments. This also makes it a good option for shooting video with audio as there is minimal noise interference from AF.
With a maximum diameter of 65.4mm, a length of 74.5mm and a weight of just 290g, the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN | Contemporary is extremely portable and a great lens for day-to-day use, ideal for vlogging and creating content on the go.
The lens goes on sale at the end of the month, on 29 October 2021, and will retail at £439.99. For more information, please visit Sigma’s website.
