Red and Nikon unveil first Z Cinema cameras

Red Digital Cinema, now a subsidiary of Nikon, has announced the launch of its first Z Cinema cameras: the V-Raptor [X] Z Mount and Komodo-X Z Mount

These pro digital cinema cameras adopt Nikon’s Z mount system, providing filmmakers with access to an extensive range of Nikkor Z and F-mount lenses.

Nikon tells us the cameras incorporate Red’s proprietary colour science and high-performance image compression while benefiting from the Nikon Z mount’s large diameter and short flange distance, which enables sharper, more detailed footage across the frame.

V-Raptor [X] Z Mount

The V-Raptor [X] Z Mount is Red’s flagship digital cinema camera, featuring an 8K VV global shutter large-format sensor. Nikon highlights its low-light performance, dynamic range and high frame rate capabilities, capturing up to 20+ stops of dynamic range in Extended Highlights mode.

Compact Komodo-X Z Mount

Aimed at versatility, the Komodo-X Z Mount houses a 6K Super 35 global shutter sensor, offering 6K recording at 80 fps and 4K at 120 fps. It supports R3D Redcode RAW, Red’s efficient proprietary format, ensuring superior colour grading flexibility. The compact design makes it a practical choice for dynamic shooting environments.

Expanded lens compatibility

Both cameras support the new Nikon Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ power zoom lens, alongside a wide range of Nikon Z and vintage F-mount lenses via the Mount Adapter FTZ II. For additional lens options, Red has introduced the Z to PL Adapter Pack, allowing filmmakers to use PL-mount cinema lenses.

The V-Raptor [X] Z Mount and Komodo-X Z Mount are now available through Red Digital Cinema and authorised dealers. For more details, visit the website.
