The Kraszna-Krausz Book Awards for photography and moving image publishing has unveiled its longlist for its 39th edition

This year’s selection emphasises personal and political themes, featuring 20 titles that explore a range of topics from the Holocaust to contemporary space exploration.

A close-up portrait of a woman with a solemn expression, bare shoulders, looking directly into the camera. Two hands, one on her forehead and one supporting her chin, frame her face against a dark background.
Two heavily worn, hole-ridden knitted slipper socks lie on a flat grey surface, highlighting their textured details and signs of wear.

Highlights from the photography and moving image categories

Among the photography nominations are Isabel Moreno Cortez’s Ángel Miguel and Alice Proujansky’s Hard Times are Fighting Times, which represent a blend of intimate personal narratives and broader societal issues.

The moving image category includes Cinematic Guerrillas by Jie Li and Black Boys: The Social Aesthetics of British Urban Film by Clive Chijioke Nwonka, both reflecting on cultural and historical contexts through cinema.

Memorable Scene with a female spy from the film Adventures in the Bandit’s Den (1958). From Cinematic Guerrillas – Propaganda, Projectionists, and Audiences in Socialist China by Jie Li (Columbia University Press)
