Canon unveils EOS C400 RF-mount cinema camera

Posted on Jun 5, 2024

Canon has announced the release of the EOS C400, a new RF-mount cinema camera designed to support large-scale production needs

The Canon EOS C400 is the company’s first high-end RF mount cinema camera. The compact, box-shaped design incorporates advanced features found in larger cameras while maintaining ease of use and operability.

The camera includes connectivity options such as genlock, return input, and a 12-pin lens terminal, making it suitable for live multi-camera productions, indie films, documentaries, and broadcasts.

EOS C400 sensor

The EOS C400 features a 6K full-frame BSI stacked CMOS sensor with 16 stops of dynamic range and, according to Canon, faster readout speeds.

The camera also includes Canon’s triple base ISO technology, which is designed to optimise low light performance with base ISO levels of 800, 3,200, and 12,800 in Canon LOG 2 OR 3.

An automatic switching mode adjusts the base ISO based on ambient lighting for ease.

EOS C400 compatibility

The EOS C400 is compatible with a range of RF lenses. It also works with Canon’s EF-EOS R mount adapters and the new PL-RF mount adaptor, for added flexibility.

The camera features enhanced metadata capabilities and connectivity for real-time data capture, aiding VFX and virtual production workflows.

EOS C400 autofocus

The EOS C400 also benefits from Canon’s introduction of Dual Pixel CMOS AF II technology to its cinema cameras. This provides 100% sensor plane coverage and includes face, eye, and body tracking, as well as animal detection and tracking.

EOS C400 recording formats

The EOS C400 offers various internal recording formats, including Canon’s 12-bit Cinema RAW Light (LT/ST/HQ), 4:2:2 10-bit XF-AVC, and new MP4-based XF-AVC S and XF-HEVC S formats.

The compact design, similar to the EOS C500 Mark II but more streamlined, supports handheld, gimbal, drone, and shoulder-mounted shooting styles.
