Canon introduces RF-S 7.8mm f/4 3D lens

Canon has unveiled the RF-S 7.8mm f/4 STM DUAL, a new 3D lens designed for APS-C cameras within the EOS R system

Targeted at users interested in spatial photography and video, the lens offers a 63° field of view, closely simulating human vision.

Weighing 130g, the RF-S 7.8mm f/4 STM DUAL is designed for 3D video recording for real estate, event documentation and product demonstrations.

The lens is compact and utilises Canon’s STM autofocus system. It features nine elements in seven groups, incorporating two UD elements, which Canon says improve clarity and colour fidelity.

Other features include a minimum focusing distance of 0.15m, a seven-blade aperture, and Super Spectra coating, which helps to reduce ghosting and flare.

Initially compatible with Canon’s EOS R71, the lens supports spatial video capture intended for VR headsets and mobile devices equipped with VR viewers.

Canon also plans an update to its EOS VR Utility app, adding compatibility with Apple Vision Pro headsets and MV-HEVC codec export on Mac systems.

The RF-S 7.8mm f/4 STM DUAL will be available in November 2024 at a price of £519.99. Further details are available on Canon’s website.
