Bird Photographer of the Year 2024 winners revealed

Posted on Sep 24, 2024

The winners of the Bird Photographer of the Year 2024 competition have been announced, with Canadian photographer Patricia Homonylo taking the top prize for her striking image titled When Worlds Collide

Homonylo’s haunting photograph captures the tragic aftermath of over 4,000 birds that died after flying into windows in Toronto, highlighting the devastating effects of urban environments on bird populations.

Homonylo, a conservation photojournalist, explained that the image represents a widespread issue, with over a billion birds in North America falling victim to window collisions each year. Her work with the Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP) in Toronto helps raise awareness of this problem and promotes solutions such as bird-safe glass.

More than 23,000 images were entered into the competition from photographers around the world, competing for the £3,500 grand prize. You can view all of the winners in the gallery below, including 14-year-old Spanish photographer Andrés Luis Domínguez Blanco’s unique capture of a nuthatch descending an oak tree, which earned him the title of Young Bird Photographer of the Year.

The Bird Photographer of the Year competition, renowned for its focus on conservation, also donated £5,000 to its charity partner, Birds on the Brink, which supports global bird conservation efforts.
