Atomos has launched the Shinobi II, a high-performance, bright, 5-inch HDR monitor with a lightweight design
Renowned for pioneering the Apple ProRes HDR monitor-recorder, Atomos’ Shinobi line has been a favourite among professional videographers. Since its debut in 2019, the original Shinobi has achieved remarkable success, selling over 100,000 units globally.
Shinobi says that it has listened to user feedback and used that information as a foundation for the updated version.
Atomos CEO Jeromy Young is quoted as saying, “The most common requests from Shinobi users have been for camera control and a brighter HDR screen. Camera control required a USB-C port for the widest-possible camera compatibility and a new, brighter screen required a redesign. So, Shinobi II has been rebuilt from the ground up for modern mirrorless/DSLR cameras and HDR or SDR video workflows, as well as amazing HDR photo shooting.”
Atomos Shinobi II features
At launch, the Shinobi II offers control for most Canon, Panasonic and Sony mirrorless cameras via USB-C, and Z CAM E2 models through a separate serial cable. Atomos plans to extend support to Fujifilm, Nikon, OM System and SIGMA cameras with future firmware updates.
Young goes on to tell us that the camera control interface is user-friendly, with aperture, shutter speed, ISO and white balance easily adjusted using sliders. It is also possible to activate recording from the monitor, activating a red edge to indicate recording status.
The Shinobi II features an upgraded touchscreen that delivers peak brightness of 1500nits, 50% brighter than its predecessor. It also supports 10-bit HDR video and photo monitoring with zero latency. Tools like histogram, waveform, false colour, zebra, focus peaking and zoom are also included.
Furthermore, it is said to be 30% thinner than the first Shinobi and weighs in at a lightweight 210g.
