3 new Canon hybrid RF lenses announced

Posted on Oct 30, 2024

Canon expands RF lens line-up with three new hybrid models for photography and video

Canon has introduced three new lenses to its hybrid RF series for the EOS R system. The RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Z, RF 50mm f/1.4L VCM, and RF 24mm f/1.4L VCM lenses are the latest additions, which Canon says promise versatility for both video and stills.

Each lens in this line-up is designed with hybrid functionality, featuring clickless aperture rings, reduced focus breathing and reliable performance in low-light conditions.

The also feature 11-blade circular apertures, along with VCM and Nano USM motors that promise fast and quiet autofocus.

RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Z hybrid zoom

The RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Z offers a wide zoom range, suited to sports, wildlife, and reportage photography, as well as hybrid applications.

Its design includes electronic parfocal capabilities, focus breathing suppression, and built-in 5.5-stop optical image stabilisation (OIS).

Additionally, it supports Canon’s optional RF extenders and Power Zoom Adapters (PZ-E2 and PZ-E2B). Both of these can be operated remotely through Canon’s EOS Utility apps or over IP, providing options for more controlled shooting.

RF 50mm f/1.4L VCM standard prime

The RF 50mm f/1.4L VCM is a lighter alternative to Canon’s RF 50mm f/1.2L USM, with its natural focal length suitable for portraits, event photography and low-light video.

Weighing about 40% less than the f/1.2L version, the RF 50mm f/1.4L VCM offers a practical choice for photographers and videographers seeking a portable, fast-aperture prime.

RF 24mm f/1.4L VCM wide-angle prime

The RF 24mm f/1.4L VCM offers a wider angle ideal for landscapes, architecture and contextual portraiture.

Approximately 20% lighter than the EF equivalent, this lens includes a rear filter holder to expand creative options and is designed for durability in challenging conditions, consistent with Canon’s L-series specifications.

Price and availability

The RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Z is available to buy from 14 November, 2024, for £3,449.99. The RF 50mm f/1.4L VCM and RF 24mm f/1.4L VCM will be available in November for £1,539.99 and £1,679.99, respectively.
