Nikon releases the NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2

Posted on Sep 17, 2021

Nikon have launched the NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2, a compact and lightweight prime lens perfect for anything from portraits and street photography to vlogging and interviews

The lens has been designed for use with the Nikon Z mount system and is compatible with full-frame (Nikon FX-format) mirrorless cameras.

It’s a bright, standard prime lens that can achieve a 40mm angle of view on Z series full-frame cameras, or a 60mm angle of view on a Z series DX-format camera. A natural angle of view can be used to capture candid portraits or even to shoot how-to videos and interviews for anyone in the market for a truly multi-purpose lens.

The beauty of this lens is that it is extremely compact, yet captures the detail, depth and colour of its subjects with great accuracy. You can also achieve high-quality images in low-lit environments by combining the lens’ wide f/2 maximum aperture with Nikon’s wide Z mount, ideal for indoor or evening shoots.

It has a minimum focus distance of 0.29m, allowing you to capture sharp, high-resolution close-ups. If you’re looking to really make your subject stand out from the background, then you will be able to do so with beautiful bokeh effects, made possible by the lens’ rounded 9-blade aperture.

Autofocus is powered by an ultra-quiet stepping motor which harnesses the extra light gathered by the Z mount to achieve sharp focus extremely quickly. The lens is also well-equipped for video production as it has been designed to significantly suppress focus breathing. A silent control ring allows you to easily set the focus, aperture, exposure compensation and ISO.

The NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 is the latest addition to Nikon’s growing Z range. It is light, compact and above all affordable – making it a great option for anyone who’s new to the Nikon Z system. It’s the perfect size for carrying around in your pocket, although it’s so small that you can even keep it on your camera throughout the day for extra efficiency.

The lens will be available from the 30th September, retailing at £249.00 / €289.00.
