The prestigious Hasselblad Masters 2023 photography competition highlights six talented photographers as category winners

Hasselblad has revealed the winners of the Hasselblad Masters 2023 competition, showcasing photography talent across six categories: Landscape, Architecture, Portrait, Art, Street and Project//21.

The competition attracted entries from renowned professionals, emerging photographers, and photographers under the age of 21.

Record-breaking entries

The biannual competition, which opened in December 2023, received a record 85,000 image submissions from photographers worldwide, a 35% increase compared to the 2021 competition.

The winners were selected based on their photographic ability, creativity, and technique, through a combination of public voting and evaluation by a professional grand jury.

Category winners

Landscape

Weimin Chu from China with Tibetan Landscape from the Train Window. Chu’s images capture traditional landscapes alongside modern developments, creating a journey through time and scenery.

Panji Indra Permana from Indonesia with Bicycle Street Sellers of Jakarta. Permana’s work focuses on Indonesia’s cycling culture during the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasising the importance of bicycles in daily life.

Art

Jan Pypers from Belgium with Diorama. Pypers blends reality with surrealism, urging a reconnection with nature through his innovative and thought-provoking images.

Street

Tom Pitts from the United Kingdom with The Commute. Pitts captures the emotions of commuters in England, revealing the beauty in everyday moments.

Project // 21

Efraïm Baaijens from the Netherlands with Tiny Titans. Baaijens’ macro images showcase the intricate details of insects, promoting respect for all life forms.

Awards and prizes

Each category winner receives the title of ‘Hasselblad Master’ and is awarded a Hasselblad 100-megapixel mirrorless medium format camera, two XCD Series lenses, and a creative fund of €5,000.

The winners will also participate in a collaborative project with Hasselblad and have their work published in the Hasselblad Masters book.

Stefan Jensen, Photographer and Curator at the Hasselblad Foundation and Grand Jury Chair, commented, “the high level of quality in submissions made selection difficult. They range from documentary to staged images and collages, but what they have in common is that they are a reflection of reality. This competition’s photographers open doors for viewers to understand and make sense of their surroundings, demonstrating the strength of the photographic image in contemporary times.”
